Currently, I have no specific name for the Naga. Something related to snake, such as Guivra. I'm also fine with making up some crap. - The Naga live on a secluded island, a mile or so away from the bay. Their island is full of lush vegetation in the center, paning out into swamp. The Western Shore is very steep and rigid, large waves constantly crashing onto the edge. The Eastern Shore is an evened beach coated with black sand. A good (?) miles lies between the two shores.
- Below the water, a coral reef thrives and encircles a good 2/3 of the island. Not many Naga venture into the sea because of that reason.
- A sacred Temple emploded with knowledge and ancient artifacts lies directly in the midst of the island. It is heavily guarded and under utmost secrecy.
- No land animal had access to the Naga's island, mainly because they have no way of reaching it rather than swimming. Even the most desperate don't make it far, because the Merpeople circle the waters below. The Naga, however, are well aware of a hidden passage weaving below the ocean floor. It reappears along the bay, yet no land creature has found it.
- They will be having tribal ranks. I made them up a while back.
Gamma: The chieftan. He is accompanied by a harem, and has complete control over his tribe. Zeta: The rank below the chieftan. He is the Gamma's son - next in line for the throne. He is more familiar with the people of his tribe. Eta: Guards. They protect both the Gamma and the Zeta with their lives. They usually escort them from place to place, and carry heavy polearms. Lambida: These are the hunters. They spear fish and animals alike with... well, a spear. They also act as scouts, although threats are extremely uncommon. Thota: The Shaman. He/she acquires visions from their ancestors and uses a variety of herbs and potions to cure diseases or to heal the wounded. Xi: These are the commoners. They provide their tribe with the less necessary materials. Blacksmiths, Marketeers, and even a Farmer from time to time. Lowe: These creatures have proven themselves unworthy or are not of the Naga heritage. They act as slaves, and work for no charge. They often recieve scowls.

I said it should be swampy so they can still interact with the merfolks (cuz they can swim up into the swamps) and a humid environment suits snakes very much.
Also I imagine them all to be black/dark-skinned tribal people C:

I imagine the same thing. All swampy with a few channels of rivers and stuff.
Yeah, I don't want them to be albino. o.o

Perhaps the snake part of them can determine what "noble house" they're a part of or something? Like their society is governed by a council of the # most powerful noble houses, and the leaders of those houses meet in the council, and each house has like a special snake breed that's their symbol and what they're partially made of.

That sounds good, but not for the Naga. They're more tribal and wehavepointysticksdonttouchourtemple. Not too organized.
Maybe that'd work better for the Sphinx? I would suggest the Merfolk, but they don't really have different breeds. xD
Perhaps they should just have one ruler, not a pair.
Like a Chieftan.
Thought I don't want them to be too tribal, since I think Naga armor would be boss.
Though it'd be difficult to make, with their swamp and all.

So then what type of aminal you are would determine what house you're from for the Sphinx. Right.
Perhaps just a Chieftan then, and then he can have a harem or whatnot. And I mean, they've got metalsmiths as their allies, so they could probably negotiate some sort of armor trade.

Yeeessss a harem! :'D
Yeah. They should have a trade negotiation with the Sphinx. They give them metal, while the Naga give them... armor/weapons? Since they're animals and all, they can't really create things.
I wanna make an elk Sphinx. o.o Then he'd be all pokepokepoke with his antlers.
Naga wouldn't be too tribal, like the Native Americans. Just slightly.
They should have Spearmen or something. Spearsnakes. xD
They should have really awesome ranks, tho.
Like... Lambida (Hunter people. Maybe they goh fishin or somethin?) Xi (No specific rank) Tau (Scout) Eta (Warrior/Spearman) Zeta (Second in Command type deal) Lowe (Low rank. Slaves, even.) Lota (Apprentice Medic) Theta (Medic) Gamma (Chieftan)
I used those in a dead RP of mine.
Although we wouldn't need some of those. Like Tau. Not sure if they'd need scouts.

AHAHAHAHHAHAA I AM SHIT ON EEEEVERRYYTHIIINNNGG
NAGAS
The land of the nagas is a confusing mix of swamps and jungle. Much of the jungle lies deep in the heartland of the swamps, far enough away from the southern and eastern coasts that the trees can plunge their roots deep into the soil without being poisoned by salt water. The very center of this heartland is the location of the nagas' temples, one for each tribe, their sizes and complexities depending on the size and age of the tribes. In the center of the temples is one massive temple, where the nagas congregate in times of great need and put aside their tensions and disputes. It is also where their tribes' holy people go to be blessed and officially made spirit-talkers. The jungle is where most of the more colourful and "exotic" of the naga live, as they prefer trees, vines, and firmer ground as opposed to the wet, marshy habitats of their swampy brethren. Prey is fatter and richer within the jungle, though there is also more chance of encountering the rare but fearsome jaguar, ocelot, margay, leopard, panther, jagarundi, and similar taurs, making it more dangerous. These taurs are solitary, preferring to live in isolation as opposed to the clans of their plains cousins. Nagas are typically at peace with them as well, as the nagas often dominate the higher branches of the trees and vines, leaving the lower branches and jungle floor to the furred taurs. While nagas are larger, venomous, and proportionately stronger than these furred taurs, the scales of their humanoid torsos are too thin to ward off the vicious claws of the taurs--similarly, the nagas' venomous bites are potent enough to bring down even the largest leopardtaur, and thus, the two simply prefer to avoid each other. The jungle dominates the center and the northwest of the nagas' territories, while the majority of the rest is swamp and marshland. Around the edges of where the jungle merges into the swamps and dominating most of the western part of the nagas' territory are the Black Bogs, a toxic swampland full of tarpits, subterranean fires smouldering in patches of peat, bubbling ponds of oil bubbling to the surface, and dangerously hot springs. A patch of the Black Bogs is so riddled with peat that it is constantly burning with snaking rivers of fire, and is called the Demons' Tongues. It is considered by the nagas to be the gateway to hell, and guarded by their god, the phoenix-amphiptere Quetzelqotcha(this is part with the god is total bullshit, idc what you do with it.) The only naga that dwell here are outcasts, either forced there or there by choice, criminals driven there for their crimes, plague carriers forced into quarantine, or those that practice forbidden magical arts. It is often the location of occult summonings. The swamplands are inhabited by small tribes of copperheads, cottonmouths, rattlers, cobras, and similar. To the south is where the swamplands become more water than swamp, and are occupied largely by seasnake-bodied nagas. Giant coral formations pierce the surface of the waters here, and it is considered very dangerous to navigate by the more swamp-dwelling nagas, as the coral is sharp enough to tear open an incautious naga's belly. More than one naga has been torn apart when the tide came in and dashed its body against these corals. However, these corals also contain rare and precious oysters and clams, as well as plants needed for rituals, medicines, and holy ceremonies. In these coral forests dwell not only pearl-making oysters, but oysters that produce other gems, such as cats' eyes, jades, turquoise, emeralds, sapphires, and rubies. These oysters dwell deep with the coral forests and are accessible only by the sea-snake nagas, which guard them jealously from their merpeople cousins. The coral forest territory of the seasnake nagas extend only a mile or so into the swamps, but cover several dozen miles along the contintent's eastern and southern shelf before it drops off into true ocean water. Seasnake nagas rarely travel deeper into the sea, and almost never deeper into the swampland, where they could be beached by incoming tides and be made as helpless as fish. The coral forests provide prey and shelter aplenty, and even in times of drought the seanagas rarely suffer. The eastern portion of swamp is largely dead trees, which sunk roots deep into the soils in centuries passed and were only recently choked by the saltwater of rising sea levels in the past hundred years or so. Now only saltwater-loving grasses and fungus growing on the corpses of the giant, death-blackened trees thrive there. During the summer, the fungi's large, pale, pastel-coloured caps die and plunk softly into the waters below, and for a time the main water channel passing through this dead forest is illuminated with the tiny glowing shrimp that swim in-land to feed specifically on these meaty delights. During this time, that channel is called the River of Stars. It is a holy time of song and ceremony.

ME LIKETH!
Tho the Naga aren't classified as Taurs. So they probably wouldn't be living in the same region. Since they have an awesome temple.
Seasnakes are cool, but I'm a bit meh on the idea. Since we have the Merfolks and all, it would be kind of pointless to have both Merfolk and Seasnake Naga.
We could have swimming Naga that live on the outskirts of their island thing. Then they could have more communication with the Merfolk. Like, what if the Naga needed the Merfolk? They'd have to go down there.
EDIT: Oh, by the way, I'm scraping the lake idea. Merfolk should live in the ocean.
EDITEDIT: I JUST HAD AN IDEA!
What if the Naga lived on their lil island, and then had this secret underground passage? Their temple is pretty nifty, and the Sphinx (possibly the Taur as well) want access to it.
That way they can get on and off their homeland. I mean, they can't just be isolated there.
